Race Rules

The Bootleg Sled Dog Races are run, for the most part, under the International Sled Dog Racing Association (ISDRA) Speed Race Rules. The Bootleg Sled Dog Races Race Rules contain some slight deviations from the ISDRA Speed Race Rules to address the trail and operation specific to the Bootleg Sled Dog Races. Many of the deviations from the ISDRA Speed Race Rules are exclusions of rules pertaining to group (mass) starts and rules pertaining to sled dog races featuring more than 6-dog teams. A complete set of the Bootleg Sled Dog Races Race Rules and ISDRA Speed Race Rules are available in portable document format (pdf) through the following links.

Entrants in the Junior Class must wear head protection. Attendance at the Mushers Meeting is mandatory. Extenuating circumstances will be accommodated but mushers are urged to allow ample time for travel to ensure they are present at the Mushers Meeting. If a musher will be arriving late, that musher must notify the Race Manager in advance of the Musher Meeting. All mushers must register on-line prior to the registration deadline.

EDK Musher Challenge

The Wilderness Classic Sled Dog Derby (Elkford), Rosebud Run Sleddog Classic (Didsbury) and Bootleg Sleddog Races (Kimberley) have teamed up to create a musher challenge based entirely on participation in all three races. This unprecedented initiative is designed to recognize and potentially reward mushers who make the effort to attend and compete in all three races. Placing at each of the races is not a factor in this initiative, only the fact that a musher competes in and completes any class being offered at each of the hosting events.

There will be three prize packages up for grabs, one from each of the hosting organizations. Winners will be determined by the random draw of names from a field of eligible mushers at the event being held last on the race calendar. If all races are held on schedule, the winners will be drawn at the Bootleg Sleddog Races in Kimberley in 2011. Details on the prize packages will appear here once they have been established.

To be eligible for the draw, all a musher has to do is compete in and complete a class, obtaining a final time, at each of the three races. All mushers competing in and completing at least one class in each of the three races will be automatically entered into the draw. Race times nor final placings will have any bearing on eligiblity for the EDK Musher Challenge.

Full rules for the EDK Musher Challenge are available here.

Insurance Policy

The Race Committee will make sure the event is covered by the appropriate liability insurance. The Race Committee will review the insurance policy each year to ensure adequate coverage is being held.

Each of the registrants must carry their own liability insurance with sufficient coverage to protect themselves and the Race Committee. The registration form will include a field for the registrant’s insurance broker and policy number. Each registrant must also sign a waiver indemnifying the Race Committee of any responsibility to the health and well being of the mushers, their assistants, their dogs or their equipment.

"Acts of Mother Nature" Weather Policy

The "Bootleg Sled Dog Races" Committee understands the possibility that Kimberley and surrounding areas can be hit with a freak storm or Chinook. It is with this in mind that a weather policy for registrants is made. This policy outlines the guidelines.

  1. If a storm hits on the day of the Mushers Meeting (Friday before), the hours that were allotted for Mushers Meeting will be increased on the start and the finish time.
  2. If a storm hits on the day(s) of the race the following will occur:
    1. An assessment of the facilities will be done by the Race Marshal. If at this time the facility is considered safe and operating, meaning the trail is negotiable, the race will proceed.
      OR
    2. An assessment of the facilities will be done by the Race Marshal. If at this time the facility is considered not safe, i.e. the trail is not negotiable, the Race Committee will delay the race until such time as the facilities are deemed to be safe. If, throughout the scheduled two days of the race, the Race Marshal does not deem conditions to be safe, the race will be cancelled.
  3. If a Chinook hits on the day(s) of the race or the days immediately preceding the race, an assessment of the facilities will be done by the Race Marshal and if, upon that assessment, the Race Marshal deems the trail to be unsafe for Mushers, the sled dogs or race equipment, the race will be cancelled. In this case, the Race Marshal may do this assessment at any time during the day(s) of racing and no more than 3 days preceding the race.
  4. Refunds & Discounts - If the Race Marshal has deemed the facility to be safe there will be no refunds or discounts. A discount and/or refund will only be discussed when the race trail has been deemed to not be safe by the Race Marshal throughout both scheduled race days and no racing has been allowed by the Race Marshal. Discount and/or refund discussions will apply only to Musher entry fees.
  5. In the event of catastrophic weather occurrences, the host Committee advises all registrants to be familiar with their own insurance policies as the host Committee will not be held responsible for damaged possessions.
